Interpretations announces its 26th Season!
Welcome to the 26th season of the Interpretations series. For over a quarter century, the Interpretations concert series has sought to develop a community of experimental composers, their virtuoso interpreters, improvisers, and an adventurous and supportive audience. We hope you can join us!
Two of the composers whose work we have featured over the years passed away this year: Robert Ashley and Fred Ho. Each will be celebrated in concerts featuring close collaborators: Thomas Buckner will present some of the pieces written for him by Robert Ashley over more than thirty years, and Marie Incontrera will lead the Eco-Music Big Band in her music, and the music of Fred Ho, Liberte-Anne Lymberiou, and Cal Massey.
The season also includes the work of many preeminent composer/improvisers from the US and abroad: Evan Parker performs solo and Earl Howard performs solo and with JD Parran. Jazz veteran Warren Smith brings his quartet, the trio of Chris Brown, Frank Gratowsky, and William Winant converges in New York, and Fast Forward presents a new work for ten-piece ensemble.
Also making a strong presence this season is some fascinating new music for strings – in particular, string quartets and violin duo. Michael Byron presents music for the FLUX Quartet (plus pianist Joseph Kubera and baritone Thomas Buckner), John King presents music for Cornelius Dufallo’s Secret Quartet, Pauline Kim Harris and Conrad Harris present works written for their violin duo String Noise, and Montreal’s Bozzini Quartet with new music from Canada and James Tenney’s ‘Koan for String Quartet’.
The final two concerts begin a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding in Chicago of the legendary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians: Thurman Barker presents his percussion ensemble Strike Force, pianist Amina Claudine Myers presents her trio, and Thomas Buckner sings works written for him by AACM founding members Muhal Richard Abrams, Leroy Jenkins, Roscoe Mitchell, Amina Claudine Myers, Henry Threadgill and Wadada Leo Smith.
