Morton Subotnick & Tony Martin / George Lewis & Wet Ink Ensemble

An evening of immersive creations from two esteemed composers, featuring Morton Subotnick with projected visuals from light artist / painter Tony Martin, and electro-acoustic music from George Lewis with the Wet Ink Ensemble. Martin and Subotnick will present a new project, building on a collaborative history that dates back to 1963. Wet Ink performs recent works by innovative composer, trombonist, improviser, and theorist George Lewis, including “Les Exercices Spirituels” (2010), the title work from Lewis’ new release on Tzadik’s Composer Series.

Dynamic new projects from two of New York’s most esteemed jazz visionaries. Joe McPhee’s long-standing and influential Trio X (with Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen) presents EROC TINU, a tribute to Cecil Taylor (with guests Steve Dalachinsky, Hilliard Greene, and Roy Campbell). Drummer/composer Andrew Cyrille will present a new collaborative trio with Elliott Sharp on guitar and Richard Teitelbaum on synthesizers.

Ralph Samuelson & Yoko Hiraoka / Jin Hi Kim with Samir Chatterjee & Thomas Buckner

Two innovative projects integrating traditional instruments of Japan and Korea with contemporary western musical forms and concepts. Ralph Samuelson (shakuhachi) and Yoko Hiraoka (shamisen and koto) present new works by composers Ned Rothenberg, Elizabeth Brown, Takashi Koto, and Teizo Matsumura. Jin Hi Kim (komungo, electric komungo and tall barrel drums)presents Digital Buddha II, featuring digital projections from Joel Cadman and Benton C-Bainbridge, and a four-part suite including three world premieres, with Thomas Buckner (voice) and Samir Chatterjee (tabla).

A Two-day celebration for innovative composer and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith in honor of his 70th Birthday. December 15th features Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet (with Angelica Sanchez, piano, John Lindberg, bass and Pheeroan AkLaff, drums), Mbira (with Min Xiao Fen, pipa, and Pheeroan AkLaff, drums) and his String Quartet plus Thomas Buckner, voice, and Smith on trumpet. December 16th features Leo Smith’s Golden Quintet (adding Susie Ibarra on drums), Silver Orchestra, & Organic.

Quasar Saxophone Quartet / Jason Kao Hwang’s Local Lingo

A night of engaging performances from the Canadian saxophone quartet Quasar and New York composer Jason Kao Hwang. The Quasar saxophone quartet presents work by Iannis Xenakis, Canadian composers Jean-François Laporte (who custom-built wind instruments for Quasar’s performance) and Luc Marcel, and New York’s tireless and innovative violinist/composer Jason Kao Hwang. Hwang’s own group Local Lingo (w/ Sang Won Park, William Parker, Thomas Buckner, & Joe McPhee) presents “Voices of Our Own,” featuring the poetry of Lester Afflick, Fay Chiang, Steve Dalachinsky, Patricia Spears Jones and Yuko Otomo.

A wide variety of styles and sounds ensures that no piece on this program is remotely like any of the others.

Bun-Ching Lam Three Premieres / Monique Buzzarté premieres Frances White

An evening of two innovative women in music on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Lam premieres her “Five Songs From Cold Mountain” (baritone, flute, viola & harp) & “Age D’Or” (french horn & baritone), and her “…Like Water” (violin, piano & percussion) receives its NY premiere. Buzzarté premieres White’s “Tracing”, for trombone and electronic sound, which was funded by the MAP Fund for Creative Arts Performance Projects. Buzzarté also presents works by Pauline Oliveros (with pianist Sarah Cahill), Alice ShieldsSorrel Hays, & Buzzarté’s own work “Subtle Winds” for trombone octet.

Robert Ashley: ” CONCRETE: The Next Generation”

Robert Ashley’s newest opera, “CONCRETE: The Next Generation”, incorporating new songs with some of the material of the original ”CONCRETE”, follows Robert Ashley’s preoccupation with the speech of the homeless and of people living together in a home for old people. The libretto might be considered to be the “musings” of an old man, who thinks about strange questions and answers in various forms of sarcasm, indifference, questions about the questions, and explanations. Featuring singers Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jacqueline Humbert, Joan La Barbara, and Robert Ashley, with mixing and live processing by Tom Hamilton.

Earl Howard / Melvyn Poore

An evening of new electro-acoustic music from Earl Howard and Melvyn Poore. English tubist Melvyn Poore, member of MusiFabrik as well as the large ensembles of Barry Guy, Georg Graewe, and Wolfgang Fuchs, will present his works for tuba with electronics performed by Corte Lippe. 2011 Guggenheim Fellow Earl Howard, a pioneer in the development of live electronic processing, presents the premiere of “Superstring”, with Wu Wei (sheng, erhu), Alan Jaffe (guitar), Miya Masaoka (koto), Ernst Reijseger (cello), Mark Dresser (bass), Harris Eisenstadt (percussion), and Earl Howard,( Kurzweil K2600).
