After a long pandemic hiatus, the Interpretations Series returns to for its 32nd season of leading contemporary composers, performers and improvisers. From October 2021 to May 2022, Interpretations will present six concerts at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students & seniors, available at Roulette.org and Interpretations.info.
PLEASE NOTE: Prior to entering Roulette, everyone aged 12 and older must show proof of having received at least one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine. We also ask that everyone please wear a mask.
SEASON SCHEDULE 2021-2022:
THURSDAY OCTOBER 28: ROSCOE MITCHELL
Roscoe Mitchell returns to Interpretations for a full evening of chamber works and improvisations. The program will include Sunrise on an Ice Moon for solo vibraphone, performed by Anna Wray; Cutouts for Woodwind Quintet performed by the Wavefield Ensemble comprised of Roberta Michel (flute), Katie Scheele (oboe), Eric Umble (clarinet), Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon) and John Gattis (french horn); a duet between Mitchell and percussionist Tani Tabbal; and a solo with video accompaniment by Mitchell.
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 18TH: MARI KIMURA / JOSEPH KUBERA
Violinist/composer Mari Kimura will perform a program of instrumental works that use her motion sensor invention MUGIC®. The program will include Kimura’s own Iron Bird for cymbal and MUGIC® performed by percussionist Aiyun Huang (US premiere), Motion Notions by Dai Fujikura (US premiere) performed by Kimura on violin and MUGIC®, and Kimura’s KISMET for MUGIC® and ensemble, performed by Ensemble Decipher (American premiere). / Veteran pianist Joseph Kubera performs a solo recital featuring Block Design Tom Johnson, Queens Plaza by Daniel Rothman and other works.
THURSDAY DECEMBER 2ND: AMINA CLAUDINE MYERS / DOUGLAS EWART
The Amina Claudine Myers Trio perform “Organ B3 Excursion” with Myers (Hammond B3 organ, piano & voice), Reggie Nicholson (percussion), and Jerome Harris (bass, guitar & voice). / Composer and multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart with ensemble Quasar perform Bamboo Paradise with Baba Warren Smith (percussion), Adegoke Colson (piano), J D Parran (winds and Ewart instruments) Ewart (winds and Ewart instruments), and guests.
THURSDAY MARCH 10TH: THOMAS BUCKNER
Baritone Thomas Buckner presents his 31st annual concert premiering newly commissioned works. Program to include three new works by composer/performers, all of whom will also perform: Particle Bey by Earl Howard (synthesizer and saxophones); Gold/Crack by Pauline Kim Harris (violin); and All Most the Blues by J D Parran (woodwinds). They will be joined by Conrad Harris (violin), Soo Yeon Lyuh (haegeum, a two-stringed Korean bowed instrument), and Andrew Drury (percussion).
THURSDAY APRIL 7TH: KAREN POWER / STUART SAUNDERS SMITH
Irish composer Karen Power will preside over two recent works, the US premiere of sonic pollinators, a work pairing Irish pollinators with a unique trio from Quiet Music Ensemble; and loaded silence for piano and ice to be performed by pianist Isabelle O’ Connell. / Vermont based composer Stuart Saunders Smith will offer a program of duos all featuring percussion, including Family Portraits, Our Home for soprano & vibraphone, The Envelope Poems, and Castine, with performers Jude Traxler (vibraphone & voice) Sylvia Smith (voice), Ayano Kataoka (marimba), Tiffany Du Mouthelle (voice), and Stephen Solook (vibraphone).
THURSDAY MAY 12TH: JUHO LAITINEN / TOM HAMILTON
Finnish cellist Juho Laitinen will perform a new work for electronically generated sounds and live instrumentalists based on the notion of one-dimensional lines reacting to gravitational forces by means of implosion and explosion. / New York based composer Tom Hamilton will perform a new “aural score” with live musicians and electronics.
